President (NO TIE) Stephen rang our Friday the 6th of March meeting to order. Kirby White was AWOL so Kevin (Home Run) Bunn led us in the pledge and singing and John Harbison gave a fantastic and meaningful blessing. The prayer list this week includes Barbara Porter’s daughter-in-law Nicole, Robbie Talton’s wife Deanna, Tim Dunn, Fred Cutter’s father-in-law, Charles T Haigh, Jay Gothard on his father-in-law passing away, Kirby White, Grace McGrath, and Henry Tyson’s new baby daughter – Darby Katherine.
BIRTHDAYS – Another trip around the moon for Keith Allison – March 5, and George Turner and Scott Embry – March 6 !!
NEWS FROM TODAY’S MEETING – We had 3 guests today. Jennifer Benzaquen who is the advisor for both the Builders Club and Key Club at Reid Ross, who was presented a check for $1600 for use with their programs, Tim Jackson, and Chris Thrascher. Next Club Social will be on 26 March at Scrub Oaks. Invite a friend !! Garry Winebarger informed that we still have Reverse Raffle tickets available. Please call him at 910-309-7900. Tickets are only $100 and EVERY MEMBER should be buying at least one !! Jim Schaffer reminded us that Little League Baseball is right around the corner and he is looking for sign sponsors.
ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT – Please make plans now to support the club’s annual golf tournament which will be on Thursday, 8 October at Cypress Lakes Golf Course. The tournament committee has already been at work for the event and is partnering with Lafayette Ford and the other local car dealers in a joint effort to raise funds for the club, but also for our endowment which has now surpassed $500K. We need EVERY SINGLE member to bring a team, play, support a team, fund a hole sign, or at least provide 1-2 raffle prizes in the $20-$25 range. More to follow as we get closer.
TERRIFIC KIDS HELP NEEDED !! – Terrific Kids is one of our two SIGNATURE programs in our Club and help is needed. Committee Chairman Russ Jones is doing way more work that he should be having to do, and the work is simple and not very time consuming if we all pitch in. The only thing committee members do is deliver supplies once or twice a year to the school that they support and then make the Terrific Kid of the Year presentation at their respective school in May each year. I have two schools and it is a BLAST !!!! Members (especially new members) who do not have a school need to call or email Russ and volunteer to take a school. He can be reached at (910) 495-6944 or rjones17nc@gmail.com. PLEASE get involved with this committee. It is the very foundation of everything KIWANIS !!!!!!!
PROGRAM – President Stephen introduced John Owen who operates the State Farm Agency in Raeford who spoke about Sea-Grove pottery. His family of potters goes back at least 5 generations. There are currently about 80 active potters in Sea-Grove and around 5 of them have been in business for over 50 years. He brought in samples that were absolutely beautiful and described the history of the area as it has become known nationally.
