Kiwanis Committee reports:

As usual, our Kiwanis Committees are busy. Here’s a brief re-cap:
  • President-elect selection committee announced today two outstanding candidates for President-elect. Stephen Wheeler and Jay Gothard have agreed to put their names up as candidates for President-elect. Thanks go out to Jay and Stephen for their Kiwanis leadership and their willingness to serve at President-elect. Voting for President-elect will occur in a few weeks.
  • The membership committee had a successful social last night. George Hendricks, Committee Chair, reported that there was a good attendance, and several potential new Kiwanians were on hand to learn about the Kiwanis organization.
  • The Youth Baseball Committee is looking for a Co-Chair or Vice Chair. If you are interested, contact Jim Schaffer ASAP. Our baseball program reaches several hundred youngsters each year, so if you can help, let Jim know.
  • Reading is Fun Committee needs 5 members to help cover our schools. Reading is Fun is a great committee and it is, indeed, fun to read to the children. Call Diane Parfitt if you can assist
  • Our Interclub Committee made a trip to the Lillington Kiwanis Club last week. Eight of our members made the trek to Lillington. A good time was had by all. See Kiwanian Richard Everett if you’d like to attend the next Interclub venture.
  • Hal Broadfoot, our Program Chair, is looking for programs after May 10. If you’d like to bring a program, contact Hal.
  • Our newest project, Family Fun Day, is scheduled for Sunday, June 23rd. Kiwanians Worth and Felicia Smith are chairing this event. The first Family Fun Day was held last year and was most successful, so the Kiwanis Board decided to make it an annual event. Worth and Felicia are working diligently but could probably use some help. Give them a call if you can be of assistance.
  • Our Service Leadership Program Committee is looking for Kiwanians who would like to help with starting a Circle K program at FTCC. Interested in helping? Give John Malzone a call.
  •
PRAYER LIST is long. Here are those in the Kiwanis Family that need and would appreciate your prayers: Jerry Teele; Grace Moon; John Byers; Grant Gabriel; George Turner (back at Kiwanis today); Hooper Hall (now at home); Tim Dunn’s nephew in Wilmington; L.D. Brock; Steven Moore; Robby Talton’s wife, Deanna; Chris Dixon; Kara Brittain (Debbie Best’s sister); John Holmes; Jay Gothard (was at Kiwanis today).

GUESTS at today’s meeting: Dr. Mark Regensburger and Drew Ziegler (husband of Kalli), who were on hand representing Methodist University; Josh Choi, a downtown merchant who was a guest of John Malzone. We are always delighted to have guests visit.

BIRTHDAYS this week included two Kiwanians who celebrated on the same day, April 13. Happy Birthday wishes go out to Bill West and John Holmes!

PRESENTATION: Before the start of our program, President Al presented a check for $1200 to Dr. Mark Regensburger and Drew Ziegler for the General Hugh Shelton Leadership Camp at Methodist University. For several years Methodist University has hosted this leadership camp in the summer for high school students. The camp has made a positive difference in many high school students. The stories parents of the campers tell after the camp are very special. The check that our Kiwanis Club gave today will act as scholarships for two worthy high school students.

PROGRAM: Kiwanian Richard Everett introduced Hallie Sue Clifton, who is with the Methodist Home for Children. MHFC works to provide safe, stable homes where children and teens can thrive and live fully into their God-given potential. Their service to North Carolina children and families dates back to 1899, when they began as a traditional campus-based orphanage. Today, Methodist Home for Children provides community-based services throughout the State of North Carolina. They assist children and families with a multitude of services to include areas of Juvenile Justice, Family Preservation, Early Childhood Services, Foster Care & Adoption, Higher Education and more. This was a very good program! Thanks to Hallie Sue Clifton for presenting the program and Richard Everett for bringing and introducing Hallie Sue.

Next week our program will be a history of the famous musical group “The Tams”. It will be presented by Dr. Warren McDonald who wrote the “Tams” official biography. Warren McDonald still leads a beach music group called “Classic Soul”. Warren knows the music industry, especially Beach Music, so the program should be excellent!

That does it for this week. Hope to see you at Kiwanis next week. Remember, if you see someone without a smile, give them one of yours!
