Farm City
Mark your calendar now for our annual Farm City Day on Friday, November 21. Lisa Childers advises this year’s meeting we are expecting a larger than usual crowd so plan to be here when the buffet line opens at noon. We will induct the newest member of the Cumberland County Agricultural Hall of Fame and the Young Farmer of the Year. Of course, there will be piiiiiiiiiees!
Announcements
Tricia Moreno announced we are off to a great start with our elementary school sock drive this year, but we have more than twice as many boy socks as girl socks. If you haven’t purchased your socks yet, think pink! Tricia also has 9 unclaimed ornaments for Christmas gifts for students at Cumberland Road Elementary School. Just grab an ornament on Friday and shop for the student according to the preferences on the card and return by November 28th meeting.
Roger Blackwood will host the November 20 Social at Anchor Alley on Bragg Blvd. across from the Hillcrest KFC.
Bob McAmish has three more slots to fill on December 13 at Sam’s Club to ring the Salvation Army Bell. We need two at 10:00 AM and one at noon. See Bob if you can help for an hour.
President Stephen, Treasurer Richard, Roger Blackwood and Cheryl Gleason attended the division meeting last week at the Magnolia Café and Culinary Club in Coates. Our next interclub will be to Spring Lake, where there is no spring and there is no lake. See Richard for details. Richard also announced we now have a Builders Club at Reid Ross Middle School.
Giving Tuesday
Maddie Felton Kellogg, Donor Services Manager for Cumberland Community Foundation, brought us information for this year’s Giving Tuesday Campaign which kicks off on November 24 and runs through December 2. Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity that has raised over 3.1 billion worldwide since it was founded in 1980. CCF, has run the local campaign here since 2020 with tremendous success. Last year’s campaign raised $2.88 million in nine days to directly benefit local nonprofits in Cumberland County. The Foundation provides administrative services collecting and distributing funds to the 82 participating nonprofits with NO overhead of administrative fees. So, 100% of your contributions go directly to the charities you select. But wait…..there’s more! Your contributions are amplified from a $500,000 matching fund given by a small group of generous local philanthropists including our own President’s security company that shall remain nameless. This was Maddie’s third consecutive year presenting to the club. It’s always great to see her Dad, Ellis, for his annual visit.

Parting Shot… or just too many shots to the head?
As the NFL season is in full swing, I share some of my favorite quotes from former NFL stars.
- Washington Redskins Joe Theismann: “Nobody in football should be called a genius. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.”
- New Orleans Saints George Rogers: “This season I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.”
- Dallas Cowboys Hollywood Henderson: “Terry Bradshaw is so dumb, he couldn’t spell cat if you spotted him the “C” and the “T” to which Bradshaw replied, “I may be dumb, but I’m not stupid.”
|
- The sports writers ain’t no Norman Einsteins either. In 1988 Washington Redskins Doug Williams held the distinction of being the first African-American quarterback to start in a Super Bowl Game. During the pregame press conference, some reporter asked him, “So Doug, have long have you been a black quarterback?”
|
- San Francisco 49er Jerry Rice to a reporter: “I feel like I’m the best, but you’re not going to get me to say that.”
- And finally, Clemson Tigers William “The Refrigerator” Perry: “I’ve been big ever since I was little.”
Here's hoping your team won Sunday. Be sure not to miss next Friday's meeting where we will have our own Cheryl Gleason talk about the pitfalls in real estate investing. Sound interesting.
