Kiwanis Key      August 28, 2026

Friday Meeting
It was a light crowd for our final meeting in August. Steve Brotherton led the invocation and provided updates for the prayer list, which includes Charles T. Haigh, Tim Dunn’s daughter-in-law, and Robbie Talton’s wife, Deanna. Specific health updates were shared for Norwood Bryan, who recently returned home from Village Green, and Lisa Childers, who is recovering from a calf injury and blood clots but has started work on the Farm City project. Richard Everett was hospitalized for dehydration and weakness but has begun treatments and remains in the club's thoughts.

Several guests were recognized, including Satish and Neeta Kelkar from India, Keith Miller from the YMCA, and Marcus Jacobs.

Mark Rice discussed the upcoming golf tournament honoring the late Don Price, stressing the need for hole sponsors, volunteers, and door prize donations.

John Malzone reported that the splash pad initiative is six members shy of its 40-member goal and encouraged attendees to contribute to the endowment.

Guess the Kiwanian: Scott McInvalle
  • The club played a guessing game featuring Scott McInvalle, who joined the Kiwanis in June 1978.
  • Biographical details included Scott’s upbringing in Parksville, South Carolina, and a brief seventh-grade football career that ended on the first day of practice due to a sprained ankle.
  • Scott graduated from Wofford College with a degree in economics and business and previously worked for Sonoco and Southeastern Hospital Supply.
  • He served as the business manager at Heritage Place during its construction and worked at Southeastern Hospital Supply from 1987 until his retirement in 2010.
  • Scott is an avid fisherman who frequents Santee Cooper and enjoys playing golf.
Featured Program: Blue Star Families
Denise Langdon, program director for Blue Star Families Greater Fayetteville Region, explained the organization's mission to support and connect military families.
The Blue Star symbol originated in 1917 during World War I as a way for families to display community support for members currently serving.
The Fayetteville chapter launched in April 2025 as the 13th national chapter, and a second North Carolina chapter is set to launch at Camp Lejeune this fall.
Denise noted that while nearly 30% of local students are military-affiliated, food insecurity affects one in four military families in the community.
With a $10,000 donation from Chobani, the organization was able to pay for the groceries of 25 military families at the commissary in July.
Upcoming initiatives include Welcome Week from September 26 to October 4, which includes a zoo trip for 100 members, and the "Star Stripes and Holiday Wishes" event at Sweet Valley Ranch on December 5.

No Meeting Next Friday!
George Turner won the raffle prize of $37.
Kiwanians were reminded that the club will not meet next week due to the Labor Day holiday, with the next meeting scheduled for September 11.

Parting Shot… or just too many shots to the head?
As the NFL season begins, I share some of my favorite quotes from former NFL stars.
  • Washington Redskins Joe Theismann: “Nobody in football should be called a genius.  A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.”
  • New Orleans Saints George Rogers: “This season I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.”
  • Dallas Cowboys Hollywood Henderson: “Terry Bradshaw is so dumb, he couldn’t spell cat if you spotted him the “C” and the “T” to which Bradshaw replied, “I may be dumb, but I’m not stupid.”
  • San Francisco 49er Jerry Rice to a reporter: “I feel like I’m the best, but you’re not going to get me to say that.”
  • The sports writers ain’t no Norman Einstein either.  In 1988 Washington Redskins Doug Williams held the distinction of being the first African-American quarterback to start in a Super Bowl Game.  During the pregame press conference, some wag asked him, “So Doug, have long have you been a black quarterback?”
  • And finally, (insert applause here) in honor of the Clemson Tigers defending National Champions, William “The Refrigerator” Perry: “I’ve been big ever since I was little.”
See you September 11!
