Kiwanis Key
Volume LXXIX Number 29 May 31, 2024
President-elect Jim Schaffer was presiding today for President Al Aycock. Jim did a good job as he is prepping for doing this every Friday in the next Kiwanis Year. Kirby White did his usual good job of leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance and the singing of My Country Tis of Thee.
Sick list…still lengthy. Prayers needed for: Bob McAmis’ daughter, who is having surgery today; Fred Cutter’s daughter, who has surgery scheduled next week; Tim Dunn’s brother, Preston, who recently lost a son and who is also dealing with some health issues; Grant Gabriel; Gary Weller is still in the hospital; Hooper Hall; LD Brock; Robby Talton’s wife, Deana; John Malzone’s wife, Shirley; Debbie Best’s sister, Kara Brittain. Gary Winebarger did an excellent job giving the invocation and remembering those who need our prayers.
Welcome back! Our caterer, John Byers, was back in action in the kitchen today and prepared a delicious meal. It was great to have John back with us.
Guests: John Malzone introduced Tim Vance and George Hendricks introduced Camilo Estremadoiro, who attended the new member orientation last night. We were delighted to have Tim and Camilo visit and hope they will return.
Committee activities:
TERRIFIC KIDS,,,Kudos to Diane Parfitt and her committee for very good work. Many Terrific Kids of the Year awards were presented in elementary schools across Cumberland County in the past two weeks. Great job Diane and committee!
MEMBERSHIP…George Hendricks reported that the New Member Orientation held yesterday morning was a success. Three new members were inducted!
FAMILY FUN DAY…will take place at the Kiwanis Center (actually the park) on June 23rd. Kiwanians Worth and Felicia Smith are chairing this event for the second year. Last year’s event was very successful and plans for this year are to make it bigger and better! Mark your calendars to attend and maybe work at our second Family Fun Day. Reach out to either Worth of Felicia if you would like to assist.
SPLASH PAD CHALLENGE…will begin next Friday. This is an effort to raise money for our Kiwanis Endowment. If you walk through the splash pad with your clothes on John Malzone and his committee will donate $100 for each Kiwanian who ventures through the splash pad. WARNING: if you walk through the splash pad with NO clothes on, you will be ARRESTED! Seriously, this is a great fun raiser for our Kiwanis Endowment!
HAPPY BIRTHDAY…Kiwanians celebrating birthdays are: Robbie Hicks (May 25); Jack McGinley (May 26); Grant Gabriel (May 28); and Tom Keith (today, May 31). Happy Birthday to all!
Trivia question for today…Who was the last President of the United States to speak at a Kiwanis International Convention? The answer was Ronald Reagan in 1987. Kiwanian Kim Thomas knew the answer and won an additional raffle ticket. I certainly knew the answer, since I attended that convention along with our late Kiwanis President, Owen Cook.
Program: Kiwanian Tim Dunn brought NC State Senator Val Applewhite. Senator Applewhite is a freshman State Senator who represents primarily Cumberland County (District 19). She brought a copy of the State budget with her; and told us she had one day to read it before the vote to approve or disapprove (the budget appeared to be several hundred pages). She did mention that when she arrived at the legislature, she took part in a dinner for freshman legislators. The dinner was bi-partisan and was designed for the new legislators to get to know one another, not to talk politics. That seemed to be an excellent idea, since the two parties do not appear to talk to one another much anymore. She did share the various organizations in Cumberland County that received funds in the current budget and she mentioned that we need more cooperation and synergy among our elected bodies, both State and Local. Good program! Thanks to Kiwanian Tim Dunn for arranging the program.
Next week Kiwanian Felicia Smith will bring Cameron Florio of the Grace Community University Model School that comes to Fayetteville this coming Fall.
Hope to see you next week. Remember, you have to eat somewhere on Friday, so why not join us at Kiwanis.
