President Stephen Wheeler rung us in. Kirby White led us in song and pledge. Roger Blackwood gave a nice invocation. This week’s prayer list includes Robby Talton’s wife, Deanna, Tim Dunn, Barbara Porter’s daughter-in-law, Nicole, Kirby White was with us, but still wanted prayers, and Fred Cutter’s daughter; Lee Warren is having hip surgery on July 30; Henry Tyson’s daughter Darby, Charles T. Haigh, Norwood Bryan, the Aycock family, Danny Highsmith, who was back with us today!, Cheryl Gleeson’s mother, family of Ed Jackson and Kalli Zieglar.
Guests today included Kiwanis spouse and near member Jennie White.
Kiwanis Birthdays: July 3, Grace McGrath; July 5, Tim Dunn; July 5 Joel Coram, July 10 Alan Buffaloe, Tom Johnston and Felicia Smith. Happy Birthday to all y’all!
Membership Committee-Jim Ammons sponsored Adam Phillips who will be presented for a membership vote at the August Bored meeting.
Golf Committee-October 8 at Gates Four. Save the date. Sign up to play, or sponsor. This is a large club fundraiser so we need “all hands-on deck.” Sponsor a hole, sponsor a team, buy a gift $25 or more. See Jay Gothard or Bruce Brown.
Splash Pad challenge- John Malzone rambled on for several minutes, insulted the club, called us cheapskates, but eventually got around to his point that he is recruiting members to take the plunge. Great sales technique, John!
Guess the Kiwanian- after some clues about being born in Georgia, being homeless, and living out of a car, becoming a chef at a Michelin star restaurant, being married by a jail chaplain, breaking Secretary Bob’s windshield, going to seminary, being married to a psychiatrist, publishing ten books, and moving here five months ago, Brad Hurley correctly guessed that our Mystery Kiwanian was Tim Jackson!
Steve Brotherton introduced our program: Nutritionist Dr. Sahar Ajabshir works at Methodist as an associate professor, and is associated with the new medical school. She spoke about diagnoses and management of chronic dietary conditions. Too many statistics to repeat, but she did say that by 2030, one in two people in NC will be obese! She gave a breakdown of a good mix of carbohydrates, fat and protein is 60-20-20. She also gave some suggestions about healthy foods in answer to the many questions she got. Plant-based diets win out over animal-based diets. Excellent and practical program Steve!
Kirby White pocketed $32 in winning the 50-50 Raffle.
Our program next week is Sam Fleishman with the Cape Fear Valley Sleep Center;
Until next week…
