On this last Friday of summer, President “No Tie” Jim got us started and called on Kirby “The Vintage Crooner” White who led us in singing and the Pledge.
Jim “The Hammer” Ammons gave a beautiful invocation.

Of note, former Kiwanian Stuart Clarke recently passed away. A memorial service is scheduled for October 19 at 11am in the Cape Fear Botanical Gardens Orangery.
Guests: Since John Tyson was providing the “Did You Know Segment”, he brought along his entourage that included his wife, Kirby Tyson, Greg Floyd, Dr. Sam Bright, Cole Bright, Henry, Lindsay and Grady Tyson and Elizabeth Buffaloe (Alan Buffaloe’s daughter). Kelly Taylor was George Hendrick’s guest.
Club News
The Kiwanis Social held (sponsored by Ad Winters and Thomas Neville) was a big success with approximately 35 attending.
Shirley Malzone Splash Pad Challenge – the challenge generated 35 willing participants. John “The Italian Stallion” Malzone is sending the $3,500 to the Carolina’s Endowment to assist the Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw renovation project.
Golf Tournament – This event is set for 10/03 and we need every Kiwanian to participate at some level. You can sponsor a hole, provide a door prize, volunteer at the event or bring a group to play. This is an important fundraiser for the club, so find your place and do your part!
Terrific Kids Program – Russ Jones reported that the supplies are ready and can be picked up at Turner Realty.
Check presentation – The Club made a donation of $10,000 to the Boys and Girls Home at Lake Waccamaw.

Did You Know – As mentioned earlier, John Tyson presented a “Did You Know” segment on his late father, Henry McMillan Tyson. Mr. Tyson was a fixture in the Grays Creek community. He served with Norwood Bryan in the North Carolina Legislature for many years and was actively involved in many facets of our community. John provided a copy of a resolution for the club to read chronicling Henry’s illustrious career. This was an excellent presentation. If you are not attending the Friday meetings, you are really missing out….
The Program
The program, introduced by Camilio Estremadorio, was provided by Doug Cameron. Doug serves as president of the Cape Fear Beard Club, affectionately known as the Follicles of Freedom.The commonality of each member is they all have and enjoy facial hair (a requirement for membership) The club raises money to support children in the community through BBQ sales, canned food collections and beard competitions (yes, that’s correct). They have raised in excess of $250,000 in their efforts so far.
The Presidential Coercion Fund Activity (50/50 raffle) for $40 was won by your Editor (a first time event…)
