Friday Meeting
Thanks to an interclub meeting from the Cape Fear Club, we had all tables full on Friday. For those of you who were not at the meeting on Friday, I have three words for you- Shrimp and Grits!  Chef John continues to amaze us every week with new and delicious menu options, but Friday’s meal was extra special, high-end restaurant worthy.  Lisa Childers has promised more new menu items for Farm-City Day on November 22 in addition to our traditional fare and, of course, cakes and piiiiies.  Come early as we will have musical entertainment and a big crowd that day.
It was good to see Ellis Felton for his annual visit and Tom Williams gave a Kiwanis Tribute to John Poulos of the Cape Fear Club.  If you would like to honor and recognize someone that has been special to you in your Kiwanis journey, contact President Jim.

Announcements
We are in full swing again with all Kiwanis projects, so we have a long list of updates and announcements.
  • Garry Winebarger and Russ Jones announced we have received our first batch of books for Reading is Fun.  Please get your books after the Friday meeting and try to complete your first reading before the Christmas break.
  • Cheryl Gleason reports we had a very well attended Kiwanis Social last Thursday at the Sip Room.  For December we will be doing a reprise of our Ugly Christmas Sweater contest from last year. More information on this as we approach the date.
  • Hal Broadfoot will host the November board meeting on Thursday, November 14 at Scrub Oaks starting at 6:30 PM.
  • Bob McAmis still needs a few good Kiwanians to help with the Salvation Army bell ringing on Saturday, December 14 at the Cross Creek Mall near you-know-where.
  • Richard Everette announced the interclub visitation schedule through the end of the calendar year. Next meeting is Lillington, November 26 at noon, Spring Lake, December 11, and Clinton, December 19 at noon.  Call Richard for details.
  • Mike Pleasant helped us collect an entire tractor-trailer full of goods, clothing and food for the Western North Carolina relief effort.  Now, he wants your cash.  We have raised almost $4,000 so far. Donations will be donated to Al Miller and the United Methodist Church in Spruce Pines, NC and will help with disaster victim assistance.  If you can give, call Mike.
  • Kiwanis Day at The Boys and Girls Home of Lake Waccamaw will be this coming Saturday, November 16.  We have carpools leaving from the Kiwanis Rec Center Saturday morning.  Call President Jim for details.
  • Secretary Bob won $41 in the 50/50.
  • Next Friday, bring your laptop, iPad or cell phone for a social media primer led by our own Cheryl Gleason. Should be interesting.
Giving Tuesday
Maddie Felton Kellogg, Donor Services Manager for Cumberland Community Foundation, brought us information for this year’s Giving Tuesday Campaign which kicks off on November 25 and runs through December 4. Giving Tuesday is a global day of generosity that has raised over 3.1 billion worldwide since it was founded in 1980. CCF, has run the local campaign here since 2020 with tremendous success.  Last year’s campaign raised $2.5 million to directly benefit local nonprofits in Cumberland County.  The Foundation provides administrative services collecting and distributing funds to the 78 participating nonprofits with NO overhead or administrative fees.  So, 100% of your contributions go directly to the charities you select.  But wait…..there’s more!  Your contributions are amplified from a $525,000 matching fund given by a small group of generous local philanthropists including our own Will Gillis.

Parting Shot… or just too many shots to the head?
As the NFL season is in full swing, I share some of my favorite quotes from former NFL stars.
  • Washington Redskins Joe Theismann: “Nobody in football should be called a genius.  A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.”
  • New Orleans Saints George Rogers: “This season I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first.”
  • Dallas Cowboys Hollywood Henderson: “Terry Bradshaw is so dumb, he couldn’t spell cat if you spotted him the “C” and the “T” to which Bradshaw replied, “I may be dumb, but I’m not stupid.
  • San Francisco 49er Jerry Rice to a reporter: “I feel like I’m the best, but you’re not going to get me to say that.”
  • The sports writers ain’t no Norman Einsteins either.  In 1988 Washington Redskins Doug Williams held the distinction of being the first African-American quarterback to start in a Super Bowl Game.  During the pregame press conference, some wag asked him, “So Doug, have long have you been a black quarterback?”
  • And finally, Clemson Tigers William “The Refrigerator” Perry: “I’ve been big ever since I was little.”
Hope your team won this weekend!  Til next week…..
