KIWANIS KEY

Volume LXXXI Number 19 February 27, 2026

Today’s meeting was again at Hay Street United Methodist Church. For the last few weeks our normal meeting place has been used as a polling place for the upcoming election. However, NEXT WEEK WE WILL RETURN TO THE KIWANIS RECREATION CENTER for our regular Friday meeting.

At today’s meeting, President Stephen Wheeler was absent due to an illness; President-elect Jay Gothard was absent due to the death of his mother, so former President Hal Broadfoot did a very nice job presiding over the meeting.

Mark Rice, filling in for Kirby White, led off by leading us in My Country Tis of Thee and the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag. Bob McAmis did a fine job in giving Invocation.

Prayer List: includes Charles T. Haigh, Jr.; Tim Dunn; Barbara Porter’s daughter-in-law, Nicole; Robbie Talton’s wife, Deanna; Fred Cutter’s father-in-law; Kirby White (who is still in the hospital following a bad fall). Richard Everett and Roger Blackwood visited Kirby following today’s Kiwanis meeting and learned Kirby will be going home TODAY; Jay Gothard on the death of his mother; and the infant daughter of Henry Tyson and granddaughter of John Tyson, who was born premature at a weight of 2 ½ pounds and has been in NICU unit at Cape Fear Valley since February 8th. Miss Darby Katherine Tyson is reported to be a fighter and while she has a long road ahead of her, she continues to improve.  Please keep the Tyson family and all of those on our prayer list in your prayers.

Guest: We were happy to welcome Hal Broadfoot’s guest, the retired minister at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Robert Alves. It was great to have Robert with us today!

Birthdays: Barbara Porter (2-19) and President-Elect Jay Gothard (2-22).

Our last Kiwanis Social was held at Mike Pleasant's home last Thursday night, February 19th, Mike Pleasant, Sandy Saunders and Scott McInvaille were the hosts for the social and it was truly well done! Our next Kiwanis Social will be on March 26th from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Scrub Oaks, just north of Methodist University. Our hosts will be Steve Brotherton and George Hendricks. Be sure to mark your calendar and make every effort to attend.

Interclub: Richard Everett reported that a group of our Kiwanians traveled to Clinton last week to visit the Clinton Kiwanis Club.

Program: Hal Broadfoot introduced former City of Fayetteville Historian, Bruce Daws, who presented an excellent program about the Battle of Moore’s Creek Bridge. This battle occurred back in the late 1700’s prior to the United States gaining independence from England. At that time, Daws told us that the colonists in what is now the Fayetteville area were split as to their feelings about who they supported. He said 1/3 of the locals were Loyalists (supporting England), 1/3 were Patriots who supported Independence and 1/3 had no opinion. The Patriots enjoyed a decisive victory at the battle of Moore’s Creek, which was a turning point in North Carolinians’ support of Independence.

Next week’s program at the Kiwanis Center will be brought by President Stephen. He will be introducing John Owen who will speak about Seagrove Pottery. Sounds like a very good program.

Final thought: “When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.”

…Benjamin Franklin

That does it for this week. I look forward to seeing you next week at Kiwanis.
