SALUTES AT SEGRA
What a special evening at Segra Stadium for our annual Awards Night! This is the one night of the year where we get together for a nice meal with our spouses/guests and spend most of the evening patting each other on the back for jobs well done during the past Kiwanis year. Formally known as Ladies Night, the name changed a few years ago, but the format of the evening remains basically the same year after year.
Salutes go out to the following Award Winners:
  • Life Membership given to Past President Ad Winters!
  • COOK-HARSANT WHITLEY CUP for the Quiet Kiwanian who works diligently without receiving recognition. This award was presented to Russ Jones!
  • HIGHSMITH CUP given to the Committee Member of the Year. And the winner is John “Harbo” Harbison!
  • STRUPLER-WILLIAMSON CUP for Program of the Year was awarded to Lisa Childers for her outstanding work as Chair of Farm-City Day!
  • STEWART CUP for Outstanding Committee Chair went to George Hendricks!
  • ROSE-TINNIN CUP for Outstanding Kiwanis Spirit was awarded to Roger Blackwood!
  • J.O. TALLY AWARD for Outstanding Service to the “K” family was presented to Bruce Brown and Mark Fisher!
  • E.J. WELLS CUP for Outstanding Civic Contributions went to Diane Parfitt!
Heartiest congratulations to each of these Award Winners! All are TERRIFIC Kiwanians!!!
Kiwanian Bruce Brown gave an impressive update on the state of our VanStory-Maxwell Endowment. The endowment now totals $438,000! Special mention goes to late Kiwanians Jerry Teele and Sam Meares. Each left $10,000 in their respective wills to the Kiwanis Endowment!
President-elect Stephen Wheeler remembered those Kiwanians who have passed away during the past Kiwanis year. The three very special Kiwanians were:
            Jerry Teele
            Talmadge Baggett
            Sam Meares
Each of these three truly excellent Kiwanians served our club with distinction!
Thanks go out to President-elect Stephen and his committee for jobs well done in planning and executing a most memorable Awards Night. Kudos also go to John Malzone for an excellent presentation about Kiwanis done in a British/New Jersey accent; and to the one an only John Holmes for yet another outstanding Laws and Regulations!
PRAYER LIST…Kalli Ziegler, whose brother Jim is in a coma and another brother of Kalli, Paul, is on permanent dialysis; the family of Kiwanian Dick Lewis, who passed away over the weekend. Dick was Kiwanis President in 1983, and he was a well-respected attorney and civic leader in our community; for the family of former Kiwanian and Fayetteville City Manager, John Smith, on the loss of his wife, Sally, last week. John and Sally moved to the NC mountains (near Asheville) several years ago; Cheryl Gleason’s daughter, Amy Moses; Debbie Best’s sister, Kara Brittain; Cathy Schaffer; Tom Keith’s wife, Anne; Robbie Talton’s wife, Deanna; Bobby Bleecker; Barbara Porter’s daughter-in-law, Nicole; Bob Ervin and Garry Winebarger. Please remember all in your thoughts and prayers.
KIWANIS SOCIAL…is upcoming this Thursday, February 27th at Logan’s Roadhouse. Festivities begin at 5:30 PM. Bring a guest who might be a prospective member of our club.
INTER-CLUB RELATIONS…will travel to the Lillington club this Wednesday, February 26. The Lillington club meets at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek. Be in touch with Richard Everett is you’d like to attend. We need at least four members to attend for the visit to be counted by Kiwanis International.
YOUTH BASEBALL…begins soon. Opening day is scheduled for Saturday, April 5th at 9 AM at Kiwanis Park, which is adjacent to the Kiwanis Center. President Jim “Mr. Baseball” and Kim Thomas need some more sign sponsors. If you and/or your business would like to purchase a sign, or if you know someone who is a good prospect for a sign, let Kim or “Mr. Baseball” know. The signs stay on display all year, which is one good selling point with a prospective buyer. The main reason to sell a sign is that Youth Baseball reaches more than 400 youngsters each year.
PARTING THOUGHT from Warren Buffett…
“It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minutes to ruin it. If you think about that, you’ll do things differently.”
That does it for this week. Hope to see you at Kiwanis this Friday. Former Governor Phil Harris has said for years that you need somewhere to eat on Friday, why not eat at Kiwanis.
