KIWANIS KEY
Volume LXXIX Number 36 July 19, 2024
President Al Aycock rang the bell at approximately 1:15 to begin our meeting. Kirby White led us in My Country Tis of the and the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag, followed by an invocation by Harbo Harbison.
Prayer List…in the past two weeks, two members of our Kiwanis family have passed away. First, Past President John Malzone lost his wife, Shirley, and then last weekend Past President Talmadge Baggett died suddenly and unexpectedly. Both funeral services were well attended by our fellow Kiwanis members. Please remember the Baggett and Malzone families in your prayers. Others that need our prayers are: the C.V.Downing family. Carey Downing, a former Kiwanian, was a son of C.V. Downing; Tim Dunn’s brothers; Gary Weller, who is back in the hospital; Kara Brittin, Debbie Best’s sister; Robby Talton’s wife, Deanna; and, Bruce Brown, who has had recent back surgery. Thank you for remembering all of these members of our Kiwanis family.
Guests…included Hailey Edwards, a student at Methodist University, who will graduate in December and Diane Regensburger, wife of our guest speaker. We are always delighted to have guests and welcome them to return.
Kiwanis Birthdays…Happy Birthday wishes go out to both John Tyson and Henry Tyson, who celebrated birthdays on July 14th. John is the father and Henry is the son. Very special to see a father and son celebrate on the same day!
Kiwanis Trivia…President Al asked the question did anyone know who the new Kiwanis International Trustee who was elected at the recent Kiwanis International Convention from the Carolinas District. Nobody in the building knew the answer, but former Kiwanis International Trustee, Gary Cooper (who was attending online) knew the answer was Dawn Puderbaugh Hodges.
New Members…Welcome to Jamie Ammons and Camilo Estremadorio! Jamie was sponsored by his dad, Judge Jim Ammons; Camilo was sponsored by George Hendricks. In addition, two of our newer members were recognized for earning their BLUE BADGES! Cheryl Gleason and Susan Dunn completed all the steps necessary to wear a BLUE BADGE. Cheryl was sponsored by John Malzone and Susan was sponsored by her husband, Tim Dunn.

Program…Kiwanian George Hendricks introduced Dr. Mark Regensburger, who heads the Tally Leadership Center at Methodist University. Dr. Regensburger gave an excellent program about the Tally Leadership Center. Methodist University offers a Minor in Leadership. Those in the program are sponsored by a faculty member. Mark spent some time talking about the General Shelton Leadership Camp, which occurs each summer at Methodist University. He said the camp is a transformational experience for both the campers and for the staff. Each day during the week of the camp there is a theme for the campers to study.
Monday: Compassion
Tuesday: Integrity
Wednesday: Respecting Diversity
Thursday: Social Responsibility
Friday: Honesty
The camp is for high school students grades 9 through 12. This Leadership Camp was initiated by General Hugh Shelton, former Ft. Bragg Commanding General and later Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Wonderful program! Thanks go out to George Hendricks for bringing the program.
Next week’s program…Grace McGrath will bring Cherene Comick, a National Institute of Learning Development certified Educational Therapist, who will update us with a presentation about kids entitled, “The Power of One.” Sounds like it will be another very interesting program.
Secretary Bob Ervin took home the raffle prize of $50. Congratulations Secretary Bob! Be sure to take Jan out to dinner!
That about does it for this week. Remember, you have to eat somewhere on Friday’s, so why not join us at Kiwanis. Good food, Good fellowship, Good program. See you next Friday!
