KIWANIS KEY                                             January 16, 2026

President (ALSO NO TIE) Stephen rang our Friday the 16th of January meeting to order.  Kirby White was AWOL so Mark Rice led us in the pledge and singing and George Hendricks gave one of the best blessings we have had in many years.  The prayer list this week includes Barbara Porter’s daughter-in-law Nicole, Robbie Talton’s wife Deanna, Tim Dunn, Fred Cutter’s father-in-law, Charles T Haigh, and Cheryl Gleason’s mother.

BIRTHDAYS – Rick Booth coughed up a dollar based on his 14 January birthday!!

NEWS FROM TODAY’S MEETING – We had our monthly Social at the North South Brewery Thursday evening, and a nice crowd of about 40 were in attendance to include a few members from the Spring Lake and Cape Fear Kiwanis clubs.  The food was good and the fellowship was great.  Our next Social will be at Mike Pleasant’s Cabin at 212 Wallstone Road on 19 February.  Make plans to attend and bring a friend.  Guests at today’s meeting included Mike Fowler, Cath Rathbone, Shannon Arnold, Tom Hatch, and Billy West.  Richard Everett announced that our next Inter Club will be on 29 January at Bahama Breeze, 6 pm, with the Cape Fear Club.  Please contact Richard if you can help.

ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT – Please make plans now to support the club’s annual golf tournament which will be on Thursday, 8 October at Cypress Lakes Golf Course.  The tournament committee has already been at work for the event and is partnering with Lafayette Ford and the other local car dealers in a joint effort to raise funds for the club, but also for our endowment which has now surpassed $500K.  We need EVERY SINGLE member to bring a team, play, support a team, fund a hole sign, or at least provide 1-2 raffle prizes in the $20-$25 range.  More to follow as we get closer.

PROGRAM  –  Former Club President Jason Poole provided a very informative program today concerning the “One Big Beautiful Bill” and the associated changes to tax law that went into effect starting in 2025.  One significant hi-lite was about making Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD)s from retirement accounts.  Bottom line – if you are over 70 ½ and are taking funds from retirement accounts like IRAs, then you should definitely speak with your tax preparer and/or financial advisor.  The impact can be significant !!!!
