KIWANIS KEY Friday May 15, 2026
President Stephen Wheeler rung us in. Kim Thomas led us in song and pledge. Hal Broadfoot gave a nice invocation. The updated prayer list includes Robby Talton’s wife, Deanna, Tim Dunn, Barbara Porter’s daughter in law, Nicole, Kirby White and Fred Cutter’s daughter, Jay Gothard and family (death of his Aunt Phyllis), Lee Warren is having hip surgery sometime; it was delayed because his wife Sue had shoulder surgery, Henry Tyson’s daughter Darby, Charles T. Haigh, Ed Jackson who is recovering well enough to come off the list! Bill Bowman, whose wife Merrilynn passed away. There were at least 20 Kiwanians at the funeral. George “Honk” Holden was back at Kiwanis today. Danny Highsmith went back in the hospital. Jim Schaeffer got a new hip!
There were no guests today. Let’s bring some guests next time!
Bored Meeting: Was held last night May 14 at Scrub Oaks Hosted by Kim Thomas. PE Jay Gothard told us that at the meeting two grant applications were approved to Police Athletic League and Methodist Children’s home.
There is a social on Thursday night, May 21 from 6PM-8PM at Anchor Allies hosted by the Membership Committee. There will be karaoke!

Family Fun Day is Saturday June 6.
Felicia Smith is looking for a few more volunteers. Please give your time to this worthy and fun cause. Note: it will be held from 9:30AM-12:30 PM this year to avoid the worst of the heat.

Nomination Committee- today we elected a new President Elect, a new President and the same old Treasurer (Thanks for agreeing to do this job, Richard)!. Jay Gothard will become President for next year and Richard Everette has agreed to stay on and George Hendricks is our new President. Congratulations to Richard, Jay and George! On Friday May 29, we will vote on seven new Board members. The slate presented that we will vote from is: Mark Rice, Steve Stokes, Kalli Zieglar, Tricia Moreno, Al Aycock, and Camilo Estremandoiro, Scott Embry, Jim Ammons, Darron Beal, Steve Brotherton, Tom Hatch and Kelly Taylor. Great job Nominating Committee! The club will continue to have excellent leadership.
Guess the Kiwanian- after some clues about working as a Dept. Sheriff and cleaning toilets in St, Petersburg FL as a first job, Kalli Zieglar figured out who the Mystery Kiwanian was. More clues were given about the MK being an MP Officer, being a sixth-degree black belt, holding various military positions and married to a pediatric dentist, and being former President of the CC Bar, Kalli Zieglar correctly guessed that our MK was Steven Stokes!
Hal Broadfoot introduced our program: Kiwanis member Tom Hatch, former principal of Terry Sanford, Anne Chestnutt, Reid Ross and other Cumberland County Schools, talked about the State of Education in North Carolina. It was a very impressive Power Point presentation which I will not even attempt to recreate, but Tom did discuss state and local funding issues as well as enrollment, retention issues as well as challenges with budgets at the State and local level. Fun fact:The State Lottery provides only 3.4 per cent of all education funding. Tom is very passionate about education issues and also very well-informed! Great program Tom Hatch!
Our average attendance is down to 25 per week. It is ALL of our responsibility to try and come and to try and bring guests and help grow the club. Covid is over; no more excuses!
President Steven pocketed $31 in winning the 50-50 Raffle.
REMEMBER, we will NOT meet next Friday, May 22, 2026 for Memorial Day, so that everyone can get to the beach and be inundated with everyone else going to the beach for the first time this year! But do come May 29, to elect a new group of Directors for the club and to see the program by State Auditor David Boliek.
